The economic crisis is all one can talk about these days.

“the economy is really bad, we must start saving”
“we must consume to save the economy”

these two comments are just some of the many comments people around the word have made

aren’t these two statements contradictory?

so may i ask, what should we do? spend or save?

do animals have rights?

what exactly do you define as rights?

rights as a whole is defined as freedom by us humans.
just search up google for the defination of human rights, “basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled”. “Human rights are the rights and freedoms of all human beings”

if this is so then shouldn’t animal rights be ” basic rights and freedoms to which all animals are entitled” and “rights and freedoms of all animals”

do animals have this freedom?
NO.

animals do not have rights in today’s society as they are being subjected to life under the beck and call of humans interest. they are not able to make their own decisions and are practically slaves to human beings

by locking and confining animals in the small, stuffy , stinky place called ZOO we are depriving animals of their rights to freedom. so what if animals are given food, water, accommodation and security? if they were back in the wilderness they would still be able to survive and find all these necessities themselves. the animals in the zoo have no say in anything, they can’t just wake up one day throw a tantrum and refuse to be objects of entertainment for humans. they have to subject themselves to watchful eyes of people everyday even if they HATE it. yar so what if there are animal nature reserves in the world? only a small percentage of animals are given the privilege of living in a “free-er” community as compared to those animals forced to call zoo their home. further more animals living in animal nature reserves do not have entire freedom, they are still confined in an enclosed area and are forced to wear tracking devices so as to enable humans to track them whenever needed. animals are hence do not have basic freedom.

the guiding philosophy behind the animal rights movement is that humans are not allowed to interfere in lives of animals any oh how, unless they are forced too. this implies that humans are not allowed to eat animals, kill animals or even rear animals. By eating meat ,wearing wool coats and riding a horse we are already compromising animal rights. one might argue that it’s inevitable to interfere in animals life as animals are part of our diet and sources of survival, and if we do not control these animals, they would attack us instead. But even if we eliminate these inevitable circumstances where we have to use animals in a humanely manner, animals still do not have rights and freedom. why are guinea pigs called guinea pigs?why are guinea pigs described as objects of experiments? scientist uses animals to test for diseases, cures, and safety of chemicals, biology teachers dissect animals to teach students on body parts. do animals have a say in these type of situation whereby their life is on the line? do animals have the choice are they allowed to say no?
NO animals do not have the choice freedom or the rights.

in conclusion animals do no have rights to do anything, they are subjected manipulation and a forced to act to the interest of humans. they have no rights they have no say and they long to be free one day.

PM lee says impact of budget to be assessed before considering off budget measures

SINGAPORE: Singapore’ Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the idea behind crafting this year’ budget is to have one that deals directly with the economic issues that confront Singapore, instead of having smaller measures every few months.

Mr Lee made the remark as he went about his rounds on the first day of the Lunar New Year to show his appreciation to workers who help keep essential industries going.

This year, it was a visit to pharmaceutical firm GlaxoSmithKline.

But with worries about the economy, the customary tossing of the “lo hei” for prosperity had an added ring of urgency this year.

Mr Lee was asked questions about off-Budget measures, such as what should happen if the global situation does not pick up.

Said PM Lee: “It’s too early to say yet but we are assessing the situation constantly and very carefully so that if we need to do more, we can do more. But I think we would prefer to make a decisive move and monitor for some time, which is what we have done with this Budget, rather than do a little bit then after a little while do a little bit more, then after while, do a little bit more.

“This way there’s an impact. Everybody knows where we stand. We’ve moved. We’ve got Jobs Credit, it’s an unprecedented programme and we’ve got the Special Risk Sharing programme that is also something we would not otherwise have wanted to think about in normal circumstances.”

As for some reactions that the Budget was more for businesses than individuals, Mr Lee pointed out that there was quite a significant package for households, although some would have wished for more.

Going forward, PM Lee said he will keep an eye on how the American and European economies do over the next six to nine months, but cautioned layoffs may still be inevitable.

Said Mr Lee: “What we do know is that there are plants which have some retrenchments in the pipeline. We hope they will look at the overall situation and consider carefully not just from the immediate point of view, but from the longer term point of view.

“(We hope the firms will) take everything into consideration, including Budget measures, Jobs Credit , SPUR programme and make a careful decision and consider retrenchments as final choice rather than first choice.”

Job security remains an issue, especially after this Lunar New Year period.

While GlaxoSmithKline itself has no plans for retrenchment this year, the chemical industries union said the sector is still facing issues with about 200-300 people having been laid off in just January alone.

GlaxoSmithKline, which opened in 1982, has invested S$1.4 billion to date – with another S$100 million to pumped in from now until 2013.

budget 2009

as everyone should know, Singapore’s GDP is estimated to have fallen by 2 %to 5%.
if you still do not understand the severity of this whole economic crisis, let me give you a comparison.

this recession is said to be the worst economic downfall since 1964, the Singapore government has also decided to dip in to it’s past reserves to tide Singaporeans through this crisis. Something we haven’t done in many years. ( not that i know how many years that refers to.)

global manufacturing fell by over 20% which has resulted in a decline in cargo volumes and export, export being one of Singapore’s cash cows.

Many are also expected to lose their jobs after Chinese new year.

but do not fret. kaisu people like me.
the singapore government understands how much money means to us.

like every damsel in distress, there’s a hero.
the singapore government has came up with an “ingenious plan” ( not proven to be true yet)
THE RESILIENCE PACKAGE.

estimated to cost a grand total of 20.5 billion, the resilience package aims to saves jobs to the maximum extent possible during this recession.

of this monumental sum of 20.5b, 5.1b will go to preserving jobs, 5.8b will go to stimulating bank lending,
2.6b is expected to enhance business cash flow problems and competitiveness, total sum contributed to supporting families ( LOW INCOMES ) sums up to 2.4b and last but not least, 4.4b will be used to develop first class infrastructures, referring to HDBs. hohohoh.

STEP NUMBER 1: LOWER THE TEMPERATURE OF YOUR HEATER

Many of us start of the day with an awesome hot shower.
Now, you there taking a nice hot shower can play you part by lowering down your heater’s strength!
instead of max-ing out your heater power why don’t turn it down to half or may be a quarter of the maximum heating strength? after all you don’t need a hot bath to wake you up,
YOU NEED A FREEZING COLD ONE

after the awesome hot shower remember to turn off your heater and bathroom lights.
wasting electricity = burning more coal.
saving electricity = saving MONEY $.$ ;D

STEP NUMBER 2: USE CFC FREE PRODUCTS

After changing into you school uniform, you go down for breakfast,
you see your mother using a NON-CFC FREE FRIDGE!!

WHAT DO YOU DO?

FREAK OUT IMMEDIATELY.
TELL YOU MUM HOW TERRIBLE NON-CFC REFRIGERATORS ARE.
Starting wailing really loudly and tell her that by owning a refrigerator like that she’s killing her family.
WAIL SOME MORE
tell her if she doesn’t change the refrigerator your not coming home (;
tell her the fridge is spoilt
go spoil the fridge ;D
do anything else to make her change the fridge.

STEP NUMBER 3: USE REUSABLE STORAGE ITEMS

Now that your mum is convinced about changing the refrigerator, ask her to pack your recess snacks into a lunch box, instead of placing them into disposable plastic bags.

SIMPLE explanation: * read if you want a reason why

• Use reusable shopping bags refillable beverage bottles and travel mugs. The amount of plastic needed to meet Americans’ yearly demand for bottled water exceeds 1.5 million barrels of oil, enough to fuel some 100,000 U.S. cars for a year. STEP NUMBER 4: TAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORT

your father offers to drive you to school in his Mercedes car truck! Be environmentally friendly ( like us ) by REJECTING HIS OFFER IMMEDIATELY! try to convince him into taking the mrt/ bus with you.

HAVEN’T YOU READ THE NEWSPAPER? 1 gallon of oil cost 100 us dollars! by burning away this 100 US$ worth of oil, your not only wasting earth’s resources ( oil), wasting 100 US $, but you also increasing the earths CARBON EMISSIONS D;

tsk. next time you see a person driving a car, shake you heads at them and give them a disgusted look ;D

STEP NUMBER 5: RECYCLE PAPER

it’s Chinese lessons! your totally anticipating it ;D the teacher walks in and tells you it’s time to write a composition. *THE WHOLE CLASS GROANS*

you take out you foolscap pad immediately and start on your composition right away. half way through your find yourself with a writers bloc, YOU CAN’T CONTINUE THE COMPO. as usual

at that point of time, please don’t crush the paper up and send it flying to the waste paper basket,

INSTEAD, send it flying to the recycled bin! for papers ;D

of course another way of saving paper is not doing you composition shh. i so did not say that.

SO NOW THAT WE’VE GIVEN YOU THE BASIC HANDY DANDY METHODS.

START DOING SO IMMEDIATELY.

Changing a refrigerator may be EXPENSIVE (and you wouldnt be able to get adidas shoes for the next 123456789 years); taking a public transport may kill you (especially when you’re stuck in the middle with people sticking their armpits in front of you?)

GLOBAL WARMING as it’s name implies, is the warming of the earth.

But that’s only the layman term for global warming. The exact description of global warming is “An overall increase in world temperatures which may be caused by additional heat being trapped by greenhouse gases” as quoted from HERE

it is true that the earths surface temperature has been increasing over the years, scientist have measured that since the end of the 19th century, the earth’s average temperature has increased by 0.3-0.6°C. A HORRIBLY HIGH INCREASE OKAY!
